Assalamu alaikum wr. wb.
Thank to God Because in this occasion I can stand up in front of you to serve some words,
But before I deliver the main content of my speech, I would like to tell you a little story about education in remote area. One day, there was a teacher who gave some question for his student. “Ok students, where do you live right now? The student said “Nusa Tenggara Timur, Sir.” “Yes, you’re right!” said the teacher. “Anybody know what the name of our country is?” asked the teacher again. And one of the student reach her hand. “Nusa Tenggara Timur, sir.” “No, Nusa tenggara Timur is the name our island, but the name of country is Indonesia” explained the teacher. “Ooo…” respond the student.
Ladies and gentleman, this is not funny story. This
is really happened in our country. It is the condition of our education. How pity it is! There are still a lot of our
friends who do not feel justice as we feel today, especially justice in
education. Education in Indonesia is not evenly distributed! However we know,
20% of the state budget has been allocated to improve the quality and the
system of education itself. But as happens in reality this time, the
advancement of education in Indonesia is only find in big cities, like Jakarta,
Bandung, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Solo. But we need to remember, Indonesia is not
only comprised of the towns only. Belitung, East Nusa Tenggara, Papua, Ambon, it’s
also the part of Indonesia. It is appropriate that they receive the same
attention as we get today. Given these differences, there must a problem’s
factor that occurs. So, what’s the problem that makes it all happened?
First, the education gap in remote areas due to
the low quality of the educators themselves. We take an example, most of
teacher who teach in elementary school of Belitung, they are only graduated
from elementary school. And the question is, where’s the teacher who was
graduated from prestigious university? Such as university in java. Most of
these teachers only want to dedicate themselves in their region. But it's very
humane at all, such a theory in economics, someone will do the sacrifice as
little as possible to get maximum results. Right? And this theory is proved, in
this day there is no such thing as "devotion". Devotion only be found
before Indonesian independence, before 1945. But after that, like the current
reality, a devotion that is really sincere, without any desire for the welfare
of salary is really hard to find in all labor in Indonesia even in the world.
The second, a problem that led to gaps and
unequal education in Indonesia, especially in remote areas is educational
support facility itself. School buildings, stationery, laboratory, library,
even electricity connection take great smooth affect for the process of advancement
for our education. I have read on a site in the Internet, there are several
schools in Papua given computer by the government. But this Computer is only
saved in the warehouse, because there has been
no electricity.
Actually there are still lot problems which
become causes of the education gap in Indonesia. For example the qualification
that under the standard, the mismatch between educational qualification of the
teacher beaten field, the application of the curriculum at school is not
accordance with the mechanism and process that are standardized, and the high
number of the dropout rate are become the basic problems, and it could be a
reason why education in Indonesia has not been evenly distributed.
Ladies and gentleman, the education gaps in
Indonesia is our nation problem that needed our nationalism to solve it. Today,
we don’t have to fight in the war to against the colonialism, but we have to
build our nationalism to feel and take real action to make our education is better.
As a student, we have to study hard and prepare for our future. Remember, we
are the next educators; there are still lot of our brother and sister in remote
area who has a lot of dreams and idea. They are waiting for our dedication to
help them to make their dreams come true. So, come on, right now, please prepare
our self for Indonesia’s future and be an extraordinary teacher for our nation!!
Thank you :)
